A few years ago I received a call from a young lady at Vogue House. She asked if I had the negative of a picture that Vogue had used of Lesley Hornby, with hair covering her face? I couldn’t remember, so she said she’d send me a fax to remind me. The fax arrived and it was obviously a picture scanned from the magazine, for there was my credit alongside the photograph. Being a fax, it was in a terrible state, with smudged ink and writing along one side of the face. I then scanned the fax into my own computer. I spent an afternoon cleaning it up, but couldn’t do anything about the writing. I had to chop the picture down the middle, reverse one side, then stick them together, so the left side of the face was identical to the right. I then hand painted the hair over the face. I couldn’t help the lady at Vogue because I didn’t have the original negative, but was rather pleased to be able to work on a new picture.
