Klaus 2

This picture was collaboration by Klaus Voorman and myself. Klaus had just done the revolutionary cover for the Beatles album ’Revolver’. I was a great admirer of Klaus, more for his brilliant draughtsmanship than his bass playing with Manfred Mann or later on The Yoko Oko Band (what was that all about?)

We had intended the picture to go on the cover of English Vogue, but after seeing it, they thought it too weird for their precious publication. Ironically, we also submitted a series of fashion pictures to go with the head, and although they were unsure, they printed them. A few months later the pictures were awarded the coveted ‘Art Directors’ best editorial pictures of the year! Those silly Billies at Vogue should have gone with that cover. Incidentally, it’s never been published.

Oh, by the way, I photographed the model first, then had A3 black & white prints made, which Klaus then drew and painted on.
